OM

Om is the sound of the universe. By chanting it we work towards a "oneness" with all things and beings in the universe. Om is used at the beginning of most Sanskrit mantras to set the intention of whatever follows.

OM (AUM) breaks down into 4 parts:

  • ‘A’ represents the physical and outer world, the
    state of being awake.

  • ‘U’ represents the dreaming state or our inner world of dreams, thoughts, and memories.

  • ‘M’ defines the state of calm and deep sleep that represents the basis of life, thought, and intelligence.

  • After you hum the ‘M’ during ‘Om’ or ‘Aum’ chanting the vibration gradually dissolves into silence. Appreciate the stillness.

Now we practice:

  • Rest in a seated position, spine straight. Make sure your body is at ease.

  • Take 3-5 natural breaths

  • Take a deep inhale

  • On the exhale chant or sing the word OM starting with an open mouth and letting your lips close as you hum the "M"

  • Repeat a minimum of 2 more times but feel free to continue as long as you like

How does OM make you feel? Write down whatever comes into your head or heart as you are chanting. It may be different everytime and there is no wrong answer!
